In these over 90 years we’ve never got (nor never will) bored of bikes. But we can’t always ride and sometimes motorcyclists need to get behind the wheel instead – probably why there are 31.7 million registered cars in Great Britain compared to 1.27 million motorcycles…

In June 2021, we asked our BikeSocial community panel whether riders make better drivers. Of the 748 responses, 89% of riders who also drive believe that riders make the safest car drivers. Following that question with a multiple-choice option, 88% of those believed this because motorcyclists are more aware of the dangers while 80% also believe it is because riders are more observant.

To give some further perspective, of the 11% surveyed that disagreed that riders make the safest drivers, 56% of those felt this was because riding is a totally different discipline to driving.

And this is also true: the very art of riding a bike is obviously clearly different to a car. Yes, there are still gears (well, not on autos…), brakes and the usual instruments etc., but with a vast quantity of bikes producing more power-to-weight performance than most affordable cars, a riders’ mind is tuned to reacting more quickly.
